Although great progress has been made in the last decades, the underlying causes of arrhythmias and the mechanisms of reentry and fibrillation in cardiac tissue are still being elucidated. To investigate these issues on a tractable level, we culture living monolayers of ventricular cardiac cells. I constructed an automated system for analyzing these monolayers incorporating optics, electronics, software, and cellular methods.
